Surinder Shinda, born as Surinder Pal Dhammi on 20 May 1953 in Choti Ayali village, Ludhiana district, Punjab, left an indelible mark on the Punjabi music scene until his passing on 26 July 2023. Beginning on his musical journey in 1959, Shinda’s career was rich and varied, contributing close to 165 music albums and nurturing talents like the late Amar Singh Chamkila. He was known for his distinctive Kali singing style, particularly in collaboration with Kuldeep Manak, and his songs have resonated across generations. Notable hits like “Jeona Morh”, “Putt Jattan De“, and “Truck Billiya” have become anthems within the community. Shinda’s contributions were recognized with prestigious awards, including a Lifetime Achievement award at the 2013 Brit Asia TV Music Awards and the Shiromani Gayak Award from the Punjab Government. These honour underscored his significant impact on Punjabi music and culture. His ability to bridge traditional and modern elements helped pave the way for future artists, earning him the title of the “grandfather of MOC (Music on Console)” and cementing his legacy as a pioneering figure in the industry.
