Hindi Puran Bhagat (1933)

Puran Bhagat (1933) is a Hindi devotional biopic film directed by Debaki Bose, marking his debut in Hindi cinema. The film was produced by New Theatres Ltd., Calcutta, and features a distinguished cast including K. L. Saigal, Uma Shashi, K. C. Dey, Molina Devi, and Kumar. The story is based on a popular Punjabi devotional tale about Puran Bhagat, which was a significant departure from New Theatres’ usual focus on Bengali literature and traditional stories.

The film narrates the legend of Prince Puran, born to King Silwan of Sialkot and Queen Ichhara after years of penance. A curse from the Raj Guru prevents the royal couple from seeing their son until he turns 16. The prince is raised by the Raj Guru, but the king’s general, Mahipat, who desires the throne, spreads rumors about Puran’s behavior. When Puran returns home, the king’s young wife, Luna, falls for him, but after he rejects her, she accuses him of molestation. Puran is mutilated and thrown into a well, where he is saved by the saint Guru Gorakhnath, who heals him and takes him as a disciple. Eventually, Puran helps restore his father’s throne but renounces his kingdom to live as an ascetic. The music for Puran Bhagat was composed by R. C. Boral, making it his first major Hindi film success. The film features notable songs sung by K. L. Saigal and K. C. Dey, such as “Din Neeke Beete Jaate Hain” and “Raadhe Raani De Daaro Naa Bansari Mori Re,” which blend classical Indian ragas with folk elements, setting a trend in Hindi film music.
