Music Director Ajit Merchant

Ajit Merchant was a respected music director from India, known for his work in Gujarati, Hindi, and Marathi cinema and theater. Born in a family native to Bet Dwarka, he was introduced to music at a young age by his father and later trained under Shivkumar Shukla. Initially, Merchant was a stage actor, winning awards for his performances. His big break in music direction came with the film “Divadandi” in 1950, which included the hit song “Taro Aankhno Afeeni.” Throughout his career, Ajit Merchant composed music for various films, including “Sapera” (1961), “Refugee” (1948), and “Indra Leela” (1956). He is particularly celebrated for his contributions to Gujarati cinema with films like “Kariyavar” and “Lagna Mandap.” Some of his famous songs include “Main Bhi Hoon Majboor” and “Chacha Ne Chachi Ko Chandi Ke” from “Lady Killer“. which he performed on All India Radio. Merchant was honored with the Lifetime Achievement award by Maharashtra Rajya Gujarati Sahitya Akademi in 2007, recognizing his extensive contributions to the field of music.
