He began his career in music at a young age, recording his first song at the age of 10. Hazarika’s work is celebrated for introducing the culture and folk music of Assam and Northeast India to Hindi cinema. He received numerous awards for his contribution to music, including the National Film Award for Best Music Direction in 1975, and the Padma Shri in 1977. His songs like “Bistirno Parore,” “Moi Eti Jajabor,” and “Ganga Mor Maa” are very popular. Hazarika’s significant awards in music direction include the Best Music Director National Award for the film “Chameli Memsaab” in 1975 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987.
