Channi Singh, born on January 12, 1952, in Malerkotla, Punjab, is known as the “Godfather of Bhangra” in the West. He moved to the UK in 1975 and co-founded the bhangra band Alaap in 1977, significantly influencing the popularity of Punjabi music among the diaspora. His unique style mixes Western and Punjabi folk instruments, modernizing Punjabi music and making it popular worldwide. Channi’s work includes performing at prestigious venues like Madison Square Garden and the Royal Albert Hall. His notable contributions have been popular with a Lifetime Achievement Award from BBC Radio and an OBE for services to Bhangra music. Some of Channi Singh’s most renowned songs include “Boliyan” and “Chham Chham Nachdi Phiran” from the film “Yalgaar” (1992) and “Dil Le Gayee” from “Jasbir Jassi”. His music direction in “Yalgaar” not only won honor but also built his reputation as a pioneer of the bhangra of different variations in Bollywood. His other significant works include “Shaktimaan” (1993) and “Janasheen” (2003), where his compositions played a critical role in the films’ successes.
