Music Director Hemanta Kumar Mukhopadhyay

Hemanta Kumar Mukhopadhyay, born on June 16, 1920, became a famous music director and singer in Bengali and Hindi films. He started his career with the help of S.D. Burman made music for his first movie, “Abhiyatri,” in 1947. Hemanta was known for his compositions in films and his recordings of Rabindra Sangeet. In the 1950s, he moved to Mumbai and made music for movies like the film “Nagin” which won him the Filmfare Best Music Director Award in 1955. His compositions for the Bengali movie “Shap Mochan” are also very popular. Some of Hemanta’s famous songs include “Vande Mataram” from “Anand Math,” “Hai Apna Dil To Awara” from “Solva Saal,” and “Na Tum Humen Jano” from “Baat Ek Raat Ki.” He received the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his work in “Nimantran”, the Filmfare Best Music Director Award for “Nagin” and BFJA Best Music Director Award for “Swaralipi” in 1962.
