Music Director Mohammed Zahur Khayyam

Mohammed Zahur Khayyam, known simply as Khayyam, was a famous music director in India, whose career spanned from 1948 to 2007. He was born on February 18, 1927, in Punjab, and became well-known for his music that had a classic touch, different from the popular music of his time. Some of his most memorable works include the music he composed for “Umrao Jaan,” “Kabhi Kabhie,” and “Razia Sultan.” Among these, “In Aankhon Ki Masti Ke,” “Ye Kya Jagah Hai Doston,” and “Dil Cheez Kya Hai” from the movie “Umrao Jaan” are particularly famous. Another significant work of his was for the film “Kabhi Kabhie,” which was so loved by actor Rajesh Khanna that he gifted Khayyam a car in appreciation. His contribution to music was recognized with several awards, including the Filmfare Best Music Director Award for “Kabhi Kabhie” in 1977 and “Umrao Jaan” in 1982, as well as the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for “Umrao Jaan.” In 2011, Khayyam was honored with the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards, for his contribution to music.
