Purna Das Baul Samrat, born on March 18, 1933, is a significant figure in the world of Baul music, a traditional form of Bengali folk music. He represents the seventh generation in a dynasty of prestigious musicians and has been singing since he was four years old. Known as “the King of Bauls,” Purna Das has brought Baul music to international stages. He started his career with All India Radio in 1942 as a Class A guest artist and has been involved in movie and theater productions as a singer and actor since 1958. His famous songs include “Musu Musu Hasi” from “Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi“, “Chalte Hai” from “Arohan“. His international fame grew in the 1960s when he performed with global icons like Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger, establishing him as a folk hero. Purna Das Baul has produced several honoured albums, such as “Spiritual Songs of India,” “The Bauls of Bengal,” and “Bengali Folk Songs,” which feature a mix of traditional and spiritual songs that reflect the Baul philosophy. Purna Das’s contributions to the arts have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri in 2013, one of India’s highest civilian honors, and the Indian President’s Award in 1999.
