T. K. Ramamoorthy (15 May 1922 – 17 April 2013), born in Tiruchirapalli, was a most popular Tamil music industry figure known for his light music compositions. Growing up in a family of musicians, Ramamoorthy was introduced to music at a young age, playing alongside his father on stage. He worked with AVM Studios and later formed a duo with M. S. Viswanathan. Together, they were known as “Mellisai Mannar” (Kings of Light Music) and composed music for over 100 films from the early 1950s to the mid-1960s. After parting ways with Viswanathan in 1965, Ramamoorthy worked on 19 films until 1986. During the duo’s peak, they composed hits for films like “Pudhaiyal,” “Nichaya Thaamboolam,” “Padhi Bhakti,” and “Bhaaga Pirivinai.” He also played a crucial role in shaping the careers of singers like T. M. Soundararajan and P. Susheela, further establishing the duo’s legacy in the industry. Ramamoorthy’s achievements were recognized with several honors, including an honorary doctorate from Sathyabama University in 2006, and the prestigious title of Thirai Isai Chakravarthy (Emperor of Cine Music), awarded by Tamil Nadu’s then Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa, in 2012.
