Amjad Ali Khan, born on October 9, 1945, comes from a long line of musicians with a deep history in the world of Indian classical music. He started learning the sarod from his father, Hafiz Ali Khan, at a young age and has carried forward this musical heritage with great pride. His career took off when he gave his first solo recital at just twelve years old, leading to a major performance in the United States at eighteen. Amjad Ali Khan’s contribution to music has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri, reflecting his status as one of India’s most esteemed classical musicians. Among his many notable works are compositions like “Samaagam,” “Yaara” and “Raga Bahar.” Khan has been honored internationally, having received honorary citizenship in several U.S. states and cities, including Texas and Massachusetts, which even declared April 20th as “Amjad Ali Khan Day” in 1984. His legacy continues through his sons, Amaan and Ayaan Ali Khan, who are also celebrated sarod players.
