Anil Krishna Biswas, born on 7th July 1914 in Barisal (now in Bangladesh), was a pioneer in the world of Indian cinema music, whose influence shaped the early sounds of Bollywood. Often known simply as Anil Biswas, he moved to Kolkata and later to Mumbai, where he made a significant mark in the film industry as a music director. Anil Biswas’s career was marked by his ability to blend Indian classical music with new sound technologies, thus laying the groundwork for future musical innovations in Indian cinema. His notable works include the song “Kismet” (1943), which featured the evergreen hit “Aaj Himalay Ki Choti,” signaling India’s defiant mood during the World War II era. Another significant contribution was in the movie “Anokha Pyar” (1948), where the song “Yaad Rakhna Chand Tara” became particularly popular. Throughout his illustrious career, Anil Biswas received numerous accolades that acknowledged his contributions to Indian music. He was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986 for his role in enriching Indian music.
