
Singer Ashalatha
Ashalata Wabgaonkar, born on July 2, 1941, in Goa, India, was a talented Indian actress and singer known for her versatile voice and emotive singing style. With a career spanning over six decades, she performed in more than a hundred Hindi and Marathi movies and built an acclaimed legacy in Marathi musical theater. Some of her popular songs include “Garda Sabhowati Ran Sajni” and “Arthashunya Bhase Maja” from the musical play Matsyagandha, alongside cinematic tracks like “Rut Jawan Rangin Mausam” and “Main Hu Albeli” from the film Mujrim Kaun (1966). She worked with renowned music directors like Samik Mani and trained under classical maestro Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, and collaborated with orchestras run by composers like Kalyanji–Anandji, sharing stages with legendary singers such as Mukesh and Hemant Kumar. Ashalata received numerous accolades, including a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Apne Paraye (1980) and the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Award. Her contribution to Indian performing arts has been recognized with prestigious honors and she authored the memoir Gard Sabhowati looking back at her journey. Known for her ability to convey deep emotions through her voice, she left an indelible mark on the music and film industry before passing away on September 22, 2020.
