Channi Singh, born Harcharanjit Singh Rupal on January 12, 1952, is the most popular and well-known as the “godfather” of Bhangra in the West, marking his prominence in the music industry since 1977. He co-founded Alaap, a band that played a pivotal role in popularizing Punjabi music among youth in the UK by blending Western and Punjabi folk instruments. Notably, Alaap was the first British Asian band to perform in Pakistan. Singh’s significant contributions have been acknowledged through prestigious recognitions, including the Lifetime Achievement for Punjabi Music by the Lord Mayor of Leicester and an OBE in 2012 for his services to bhangra music, charity, and the community. Some of his work includes “Yalgaar” (1992), “Shaktiman” (1993), “Teri Mohabbat Ke Naam” (1999), and “Janasheen” (2003).
