David (David Abraham Cheulkar), born on June 21, 1908, in Thane, Bombay Presidency, British India, was a renowned Indian character actor, anchor, and occasional playback singer known for his voice and contributions to Hindi cinema. He began his film career in the late 1930s, quickly gaining recognition for his versatile character acting and uncle-like roles. David’s breakout came with the film Naya Sansar (1941), which launched a four-decade career spanning over 110 movies. His rare vocal contributions include the comic, playful track “Mere Dil Ki Kothariya Pe” from the movie Actress (1948), composed by the music director Shyam Sundar and written by lyricist Nakshab Jarchavi. On this track, David worked alongside the legendary co-singer Shamshad Begum. Over the years, he received several prestigious accolades, including the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for Boot Polish (1954) and the government honor Padma Shri (1969). David’s major achievements also include serving as a prominent compere and a sports administrator representing India at the Olympic Games. His passion for the arts and dedication to public life made him a beloved figure in Indian cinema before his passing on January 2, 1982.
