Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao, born on 4th December 1922 in Chowtapalli, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, and passed away on 11th February 1974 in Madras, Tamil Nadu, was a legendary Indian playback singer and composer with a monumental contribution to Indian cinema, particularly in Telugu and Kannada films. He was celebrated for his divine talent, moving people’s hearts with his songs and is revered as one of Telugu cinema’s greatest singers. In 1970, he was honored with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, for his exceptional contribution to Indian cinema. His works include over 30,000 songs across various languages, with “Siva Sankari” from “Jagadeka Veeruni Katha,” “Rasika Raja taguvaramu kama” from “Jayabheri,” and “Syamala Dandakam – Manikya Veena” from “Mahakavi Kalidasu” standing out as iconic. Ghantasala’s mastery in blending classical improvisations with light music set him apart in playback singing, earning him the title ‘Gaana Gandharva’.
