Ilaiyaraaja, born R. Gnanathesikan on June 3, 1943, in Pannaipuram, Tamil Nadu, India, is a celebrated composer, arranger, and musician known for his contributions to Indian cinema, particularly Tamil films. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Ilaiyaraaja has composed over 7,000 songs, provided film scores for over 1,000 films, and performed in more than 20,000 concerts. He is most popular for integrating Western classical harmonies and string arrangements into Indian film music and holds the distinction of being the first South Asian to compose a full harmony. Notably, his works include soundtracks for movies like “Nayakan,” “Thalapathi,” and “My Dear Kuttichathan.” Ilaiyaraaja’s honour include the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2012 for his creative and experimental contributions to music, and the Padma Bhushan in 2010, further elevated by the Padma Vibhushan in 2018, reflecting his eminent status in the Indian music industry.
