Inder Sen Johar (often cited as Inderjeet Singh Johar or Indra Sen Johar), popularly known as I. S. Johar, was born on February 16, 1920, in Talagang, British India (now in Pakistan). He was a highly educated and multifaceted talent in the Indian film industry, holding degrees in MA and LLB before excelling as an actor, director, producer, and writer. Johar’s career spanned several decades, during which he became renowned for his unique brand of political satire, dark comedy, and witty dialogues, which he typically penned himself. Some of his most notable works include directing and starring in Johar in Bombay, Johar Mehmood in Goa, and the spoof film 5 Rifles. He famously collaborated with fellow comedy icon Mehmood, frequently shared the screen with actresses like Sonia Sahni, and worked alongside music directors such as Kalyanji–Anandji. In addition to his massive footprint in Hindi cinema, he achieved international recognition for roles in Hollywood and British productions like Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and Death on the Nile (1978). Johar received several accolades for his contributions, including the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian in 1971 for Johny Mera Naam.
