S. Janaki, born on April 23, 1938, in Pallapatla, Andhra Pradesh, is a celebrated Indian playback singer known for her versatile voice and emotive singing style. She began her career in the early 1950s and has since sung over 48,000 songs in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi. Janaki’s career took off with the song “Singara Velane Deva” from the Tamil film “Konjum Salangai” in 1962, composed by S. M. Subbaiah Naidu. She has worked with legendary music directors like Ilaiyaraaja, M. S. Viswanathan, and R. D. Burman, and has sung alongside renowned singers such as K. J. Yesudas, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, and P. B. Sreenivas. Some of her popular songs include “Pyasi Jawani Hain,” “Ninnukori Varnam,” and “Aayiram Kannumai.” Janaki has received numerous accolades, including four National Film Awards and 31 different State Film Awards. Her contribution to Indian music has been immense, earning her the title “The Nightingale of South India.”
