M.S. Subbulakshmi, born on September 16, 1916, in Madurai, India, was a legendary Carnatic vocalist and a prominent figure in Indian classical music. She began her musical journey at a young age, performing her first concert at the age of 11. Subbulakshmi’s career soared as she became known for her melodious voice and mastery over classical compositions. Her notable performances include renditions of “Mere To Girdhar Gopal”, “Girdhar Gopala Bala”, and “Pag Ghunghru Re”. She was the first musician to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 1998.
