Sachin Dev Burman, born on October 1, 1906, in Comilla, British India (now Bangladesh), was a monumental figure in Indian music, acclaimed both as a singer and a music director. Coming from a royal family, he was deeply influenced by the rich musical traditions of Bengal and the northeastern regions, bringing these influences into the film industry to create a distinct and influential body of work. Burman started his music career with Bengali films in 1937 but is most renowned for his contributions to Hindi cinema. His collaboration with icons like Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, and Asha Bhosle produced some of the most enduring songs of Indian cinema. Notable among his numerous hit songs are “Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya” from Do Bhai (1947), “Jalte Hain Jiske Liye” from Sujata (1959), and “Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaye” from Pyaasa (1957), which remains a poignant critique of societal norms​. He received the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for Aradhana (1969), marking a high point in his career with songs that captivated a generation. Another highlight was Guide (1965), for which his soundtrack not only won widespread acclaim but also set a new standard for musical storytelling in cinema. His work has been recognized posthumously as well, with Pyaasa’s soundtrack being chosen by the British Film Institute’s Sight & Sound magazine in 2004 as one of “The Best Music in Film,” a testament to his enduring influence on film music​ .
