Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, born on December 12, 1934, in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, British India, was a renowned classical singer known for his exceptional contribution to the Hindustani classical music tradition. He hailed from a family of musicians and was part of the illustrious Sham Chaurasi Gharana. Salamat Ali Khan’s career began at a young age, and he quickly gained recognition for his mastery in Khayal singing. He performed alongside his brother, Ustad Nazakat Ali Khan, and together they became one of the most celebrated duos in classical music. Some of his popular renditions include Raag Bhairav and Raag Malkauns. Throughout his career, Salamat Ali Khan collaborated with music directors and performed alongside notable co-singers including recording the multi-raaga masterpiece “Tumhre Gun Gaaun” with Lata Mangeshkar leaving a lasting impact on the music industry. He was honored with numerous awards, including the prestigious Pride of Performance (1977) and the Sitara-i-Imtiaz by the Government of Pakistan.
