Saraswati Rane, born on October 4, 1913, in Miraj, Maharashtra, was a renowned Indian classical singer known for her contribution to Hindustani classical music. She was the daughter of the legendary Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, the founder of the Kirana Gharana. Saraswati Rane’s career spanned several decades, during which she became famous for her powerful voice and mastery over various ragas. She was particularly known for her thumris and khayals. Some of her popular songs include “Been Madhur Madhur” and “Raag Dvesh Ko Chhod Ke”. She also lent her voice to several Marathi and Hindi films, collaborating with music directors like Shankar Rao Vyas. Her co-singers included her sister Hirabai Barodekar, with whom she performed famous classical jugalbandis.
