Shobha Gurtu, born on 8th February 1925, was a celebrated Indian classical vocalist known for her mastery in semi-classical music, particularly thumri, a genre that blends classical and folk elements. She was often called the “Thumri Queen” for her exceptional singing style that blended soul and emotion. Her notable songs includes “Bedardi Ban Gaye” from “Phagun (1973)”,”Balika Vadhu (Title)”, “Mora Banna Dulhan Leke” from “Faasle (1985)” and “Dil Hai Haazir Lijiye” from “Sajjo Rani (1976)”. Starting her musical journey at an early age, Shobha ji trained under eminent gurus, perfecting her distinctive voice. Notably, she was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987 for her excellence in classical music, specifically highlighting her performance of the song “Bajuband Khul Khul Jaye” in “Kudrat.” Additionally, she received the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 2002, recognizing her vast contributions and influence in the field of Indian classical music.
