Singer Ustad Bismillah Khan

Ustad Bismillah Khan, born Qamaruddin Khan on 21st March 1916 in Dumraon, Bihar, was a legendary figure in Indian classical music, renowned for his virtuoso playing of the shehnai. His musical journey began at an early age under the tutelage of his uncle, Ali Baksh ‘Vilayatu’ in Varanasi, where he was introduced to the intricacies of the shehnai. He gained national prominence with his performance at the All India Music Conference in Calcutta in 1937, which catapulted the shehnai to the limelight of classical music. Throughout his illustrious career, Ustad Bismillah Khan was associated with several notable works and performances. His performances at significant events, including the first Indian Independence Day in 1947, at the Red Fort, became a symbol of national pride. Among his famous cinematic contributions are his performances in the movies “Goonj Uthi Shehnai” (1959), which became a blockbuster hit thanks to its enchanting shehnai recitals, and “Sanaadi Appanna” (1977), a Kannada film where his shehnai played a pivotal role. Another notable documentary on his life, “Sange Meel Se Mulaqat” (1989), directed by Goutam Ghose, offered an intimate look into his life and music​. Ustad Bismillah Khan’s contributions to music were recognized with numerous awards, including India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 2001, and the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award, in 1980.
