Zareena Begum, born in 1930 in Nanpara, British India, was a legendary Indian semi-classical vocalist widely regarded as the last of the royal court singers of Awadh. She made significant contributions to the preservation of traditional Indian music, performing across the 1950s and 1960s. Zareena’s mesmerizing voice graced royal gatherings and mehfils, making her an acclaimed master of the classical baithak-style. Her training took off under the formal guidance of music masters and later under her legendary mentor, Begum Akhtar, who deeply appreciated her talent. She worked alongside independent cultural preservationists like filmmaker Muzaffar Ali, and her renditions of regional folk and ghazal poetry were highly appreciated. Her popular tracks include the traditional Awadhi piece “Nihure-Nihure Boharo”, which was featured on specialized cultural music albums. Zareena Begum’s contribution to the classical heritage of Awadh is fondly remembered, earning her the prestigious Begum Akhtar Award from the state government. Following her passing on May 12, 2018, her legacy lives on through her timeless archival recordings.
