Zohrabai Ambalewali, born in 1918 in Ambala, was a famous Indian classical and playback singer in the Hindi cinema during the 1930s and 1940s. She was celebrated for her deep, contralto voice, and her significant contributions include hits like “Ankhiyan Milake Jiyaa Bharmaake” and “Aayi Diwali, Aayi Diwali” from the movie Rattan (1944), and “Udan Khatole Pe Ud Jaoon” from Anmol Ghadi (1946). Her career, rich with contributions to the industry alongside contemporaries like Rajkumari, Shamshad Begum, and Amirbai Karnataki, gradually faded with the emergence of new talents like Geeta Dutt and Lata Mangeshkar towards the late 1940s​. Ambalewali’s early training in music came from her family background in Ambala and formal training under Ghulam Hussain Khan and Ustad Nasir Hussain Khan of the Agra Gharana. Her debut in the industry was marked by her performance on All India Radio at age 13, followed by her film debut as a playback singer in Daku Ki Ladki (1933). Her unparalleled talent shone through in her work with legendary music director Naushad Ali, contributing to the success of films such as Rattan, Anmol Ghadi, Mela (1948), and Jadoo (1951). Notably, her qawwali “Aahen Na Bhareen Shikway Na Kiye” in Zeenat (1945) was celebrated as the first Qawwali recorded in female voices in South Asian films, showcasing her versatility and pioneering spirit.
