Composer Angaraag Mahanta (Papon)

Angaraag Mahanta, popularly known as Papon, is an Indian singer, composer, and record producer from Assam. Born on November 24, 1975, in Nagaon, Assam, he is the son of renowned Assamese folk singers Khagen Mahanta and Archana Mahanta.

Papon’s musical journey began under the tutelage of his parents, immersing himself in Indian classical, devotional (Borgeet), and folk music from a young age. He further expanded his musical repertoire by learning to play instruments such as the khol, tabla, guitar, and harmonium.

In 2007, Papon founded the electronic folk-fusion band “Papon and The East India Company,” blending traditional Assamese music with contemporary sounds. The band has performed at various national and international platforms, contributing to the global recognition of Assamese music.

Throughout his career, Papon has delivered numerous hits across multiple languages, including Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Tamil, and Marathi. Some of his notable songs include “Moh Moh Ke Dhaage” from the film Dum Laga Ke Haisha, “Jiyein Kyun” from Dum Maaro Dum, and “Bulleya” from Sultan.

Papon’s contributions have been recognized with several awards, including Filmfare, Mirchi Music, and GIMA awards. His unique ability to fuse traditional folk elements with modern music continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
