Hindi Upkar (1967)

Upkar is a 1967 Indian Hindi film directed by Manoj Kumar, who also played the lead role in the movie. The film was released on the backdrop of the Indo-Pak war of 1965, and it reflects the nationalistic sentiment prevailing in India during that period. Manoj Kumar, inspired by the then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan,” crafted a story that pays tribute to both soldiers and farmers. The film also stars Asha Parekh, Prem Chopra, and Pran in significant roles.

The music for Upkar was composed by the legendary KalyanjiAnandji duo, with lyrics penned by Gulshan Bawra, Indeevar, Qamar Jalalabadi, and Prem Dhawan. The soundtrack became immensely popular, especially the song “Mere Desh Ki Dharti,” sung by Mahendra Kapoor, which went on to become an anthem of sorts for patriotism in India. Upkar was a critical and commercial success. It won several awards, including the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film and the Filmfare Best Movie Award. Manoj Kumar received the Filmfare Best Director Award for this film.
