Music Director Ali Akbar Khan

Ali Akbar Khan, born on April 14, 1922, in Shibpur, Bengal, India (now in Bangladesh), and passed away on June 18, 2009, was a famous Indian classical musician and a master of the sarod. Khan’s musical journey started under the guidance of his father, the legendary musician Allauddin Khan. He began performing at the young age of 13. By 1943, he was appointed a court musician for the Maharaja of Jodhpur, Umaid Singh, where he earned the title of Ustad. He composed music for films including notable works like Satyajit Ray’s “Devi” (1960) and “The Householder” by Merchant-Ivory. In 1956, he founded the Ali Akbar College of Music in Calcutta, aiming to preserve and teach Indian classical music. His notable songs include “Mat Karo Kisi Se Pyaar“,” “Tumhe Dulhan Mili” from “Humsafar,” and “Woh Chand Nahi Hai” from “Aandhiyan.”  He got numerous awards, including the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 1967 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1989. Ali Akbar Khan’s famous compositions and performances include “Raga Chandranandan”. He worked together with famous artists like Ravi Shankar in jugalbandis (duets) and performances at major venues like Madison Square Garden for the Concert for Bangladesh.
