Music Director Manohari Singh

Manohari Singh (8 March 1931 – 13 July 2010) born in Kolkata, was a famed music director and saxophonist who was most popular in the Indian music industry. Singh’s talent flourished under the guidance of Joseph Newman at HMV, where he explored various musical instruments, eventually finding his passion for the saxophone. His move to Mumbai in 1958, prompted by music director Salil Chowdhury, marked the beginning of a significant phase in his career. Singh, along with Basudeb Chakraborty, formed the music composer duo Basu-Manohari, contributing timeless music to Hindi cinema in the 1970s and ’80s. They are best known for their work in movies like “Sabse Bada Rupaiya” (1976), where they produced memorable songs such as “Waada Karo Jaanam” and the title track “Sabse Bada Rupaiya.” Their song “Aa Humsafar” from the movie “Chatpati” (1983). Singh’s contributions were not limited to film music; his saxophone solos in songs like “Gaata Rahe Mera Dil” from “Guide” and his performances in “Chalte Chalte” and “Veer Zaara” are celebrated. His talent was acknowledged with honors such as being honored at the Yashwantrao Chavan Natya Gruha on his 75th birthday and receiving the “Memorable Contribution to Music Award” at the Tata Indicom Radio Mirchi Music Awards in 2009.
