Pankaj Udhas, born on May 17, 1951, in Jetpur, Gujarat, India, was a distinguished ghazal and playback singer who left a lasting impact on Indian music with his velvet voice and emotive ghazals. Pankaj’s music career took a significant turn with the release of his first ghazal album “Aahat” in 1980, followed by numerous successful albums like “Mukarrar” (1981), “Tarrannum“, and “Nayaab” (1985). Among his famous tracks are “Chitthi Aayi Hai” from the movie “Naam” (1986). Another beloved song is “Chandi Jaisa Rang Hai Tera” from the film “Ek Hi Maqsad” (1988), celebrated for its melodious charm. “Jeeye To Jeeye Kaise” from the movie “Saajan” (1991) is yet another masterpiece that showcased his ability to evoke deep emotions through his music. Pankaj Udhas’s was honored with prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri in 2006 for his outstanding contribution to ghazal singing and his efforts toward helping cancer patients and thalassemic children. Another notable honor was the “Kalakar” award he received in Kolkata for “Hasrat” as the “Best Ghazal album of 2005,” further solidifying his status as a ghazal maestro. His death on February 26, 2024, marked the end of an era, but his music continues to live on, touching the hearts of many across generations.
