Pannalal Ghosh, who was born on July 24, 1911, and passed away on April 20, 1960, in Barisal (now part of Bangladesh), became a celebrated figure in Indian music. From his early years, influenced by his family’s musical background and events from his childhood, he developed a deep interest in music. This passion led him to innovate with the bansuri (flute), creating a larger version that included a seventh hole, marking a new era of innovation in Indian classical music. He is known for his compositions in films such as “Sneh Bandhan” (1940) and “Aandhiyan” (1952). As a music director, Pannalal Ghosh made significant contributions, including his work for the film “Anjaan” (1941). In this film, he collaborated with singers like Ashok Kumar, Suresh, and Rewa Shankar, featuring songs based on Raag Bihag sung by lead actors Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani. Another notable film he composed music for was “Andolan” (1951), which included tracks like “Vande Mataram Sujalam Suphalam,” sung by Sudha Malhotra, Parul Ghosh, and Manna Dey.
