Dilip Kumar (December 11, 1922 – July 7, 2021), born in Peshawar, British India (now Pakistan), was a legendary Indian actor known for his work in Hindi cinema. Though primarily an actor, his influence on the music of Indian cinema is significant, having starred in numerous films with memorable soundtracks. Over a career spanning five decades, he became known as the “Tragedy King” for his intense roles in films like Devdas (1955) and Mughal-e-Azam (1960). His collaboration with music directors like Naushad and singers such as Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar resulted in timeless songs. Dilip Kumar’s performances in movies like Naya Daur (1957) and Ganga Jamuna (1961) were complemented by soulful music and lyrics by renowned lyricists like Sahir Ludhianvi and Shakeel Badayuni.
