Farida Khanum, celebrated as the Malika-e-Ghazal (Queen of Ghazal), has been a monumental figure in South Asian classical music since her debut in the mid-20th century. Born on May 16, 1929, in Calcutta, British India, she moved to Pakistan following the partition and rapidly became a beloved ghazal singer. Her career highlights include timeless hits like “Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo,” “Wo Ishq Jo Humse,” and “Yeh Na Thi Hamari Qismat.” Farida’s accolades include the Pride of Performance Award in 1970 and the Hilal-i-Imtiaz in 2005, reflecting her significant contributions to the arts. Notable awards also include the EMI Silver Disc Awards in 1974 and the Amir Khusrau Award in 1980, both for Best Ghazal Singer. She has also been recognized with the PTV Award for Best Singer in 2000 and the Hafiz Ali Khan Award in 2005, which commend her vocal excellence and depth in interpreting ghazal music.
