Jagjit Kaur, born in May 1930, was a celebrated Indian singer known for her poignant and melodious contributions to Hindi cinema. Her career spanned from the early 1950s to the 1990s, during which she collaborated extensively with her husband, the renowned music director Mohammed Zahur Khayyam. Notably, Jagjit Kaur’s voice graced the soundtracks of films like “Shagoon” (1964), “Bazaar” (1982), and the critically acclaimed “Umrao Jaan” (1981). Some of her most memorable songs include “Tum apna ranj-o-gham” from “Shagoon,” “Dekh lo aaj hum ko jee bhar ke” from “Bazaar,” and the heart-wrenching “Kaahe ko byahi bides” from “Umrao Jaan.” Jagjit Kaur’s contributions to music were recognized with several awards. She was awarded for her songs in “Umrao Jaan,” which not only showcased her vocal finesse but also her deep emotional resonance. Her rendition of “Kaahe ko byahi bides” in this film is particularly notable for its expression of poignant farewell.
