Mukhtar Begum (born Mukhtar Khanum), born on July 12, 1901, in Amritsar, Punjab, British India, was a renowned classical singer and actress in the Indian subcontinent. She was a prominent figure in the music industry during the early 20th century, known for her soulful voice and captivating performances. Mukhtar Begum’s career began in the Parsi theater, where she honed her skills, gained popularity, and earned the title of the ‘Queen of Parsi Theatre’. She later transitioned to early talkie films, showcasing her exceptional vocal style through her signature tracks “Na To Vastra Mein Na” (from Prem Ki Aag) and “Yaad Mein Teri Jahaan” (from Jawaani Ka Nasha). Mukhtar Begum worked with esteemed music directors of her time and collaborated with famous co-singers and lyricists including her husband, the legendary dramatist Agha Hashar Kashmiri contributing significantly to the early era of cinema. After partition, she moved to Pakistan, where she continued her legacy by mentoring legendary figures like Noor Jehan, Naseem Begum, actress Rani, and her younger sister, the ghazal queen Farida Khanum. Her contributions to the classical music tradition left an indelible mark until her passing on February 25, 1982, in Karachi, Pakistan.
