Surendra, born Surendra Nath on November 11, 1910, in Punjab, British India, was a distinguished singer-actor in Hindi cinema, cherished for his mellifluous voice and compelling screen presence. His journey into the world of cinema began under the mentorship of Mehboob Khan, with whom he debuted in Deccan Queen (1936), making a lasting impression with the hit song “Birha Ki Aag Lagi More Man Mein.” Surendra’s career spanned several decades during which he delivered memorable performances in films like Gramophone Singer (1938) and the iconic Anmol Ghadi (1946). The latter film, directed by Mehboob Khan, featured Surendra alongside Noor Jehan and Suraiya, and is particularly noted for his soul-stirring renditions of “Kyun Yaad Aa Rahein Hain” and the duet “Awaaz De Kahan Hai” with Noor Jehan. Notably, he starred in Aurat (1940), also directed by Mehboob Khan, where he delivered another hit song, “Utth Sajni Khol Kiware.” His performance in Anmol Ghadi was critically acclaimed, and the film’s music, composed by Naushad, was a phenomenal success, cementing Surendra’s status in the annals of Indian cinema. Despite facing a severe accident that caused a limp, Surendra’s dedication to his craft never waned, and he continued to enchant audiences with his performances till his passing on September 11, 1987​​.
