Singer Ustad Faiyaz Khan

Ustad Faiyaz Khan, born on 8 February 1886 and passed away on 5 November 1950, was a celebrated Indian classical vocalist and a prominent exponent of the Agra gharana of Hindustani classical music. His illustrious career was marked by his deep involvement in classical genres, particularly dhrupad and khyal, although he was also skilled in thumri and ghazal. Khan was honored with the title “Aftab-e-Mausiqi” (the Sun of Music) by the Maharaja of Mysore in 1908 for his exceptional contributions to music. Among his famous compositions, his thumri “Baaju band khul khul jaye” remains widely appreciated. Throughout his life, Faiyaz Khan engaged audiences across India, performing in cities like Lucknow, Allahabad, Calcutta, Gwalior, Bombay, and Mysore, and was highly respected by both his contemporaries and the royalty of the time, including being a court musician for Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the Maharaja of Baroda. Despite facing health challenges later in life, Khan’s legacy continues through his recordings and his influence on future generations of musicians, including notable students like K.L. Saigal.
