Ustad Sultan Khan, born on April 15, 1940, in Jodhpur, India, was a revered figure in the Indian music scene, celebrated for his mastery of the sarangi and his soulful voice. He hailed from a family deeply rooted in musical tradition, belonging to the Indore gharana. His career spanned over several decades, beginning in the early 1960s when he started performing professionally. His contributions to Indian classical music were immense, not just as a performer but also as an educator and innovator who blended traditional Indian sounds with international genres.

Notable among his many collaborations was his involvement with the fusion group Tabla Beat Science, alongside notable artists like Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell. One of his most acclaimed works is the album “Piya Basanti,” released in 2000, which he recorded with the singer K.S. Chitra. The title track of this album won the international viewers’ choice award at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards. He also featured in the movie “Yogi,” where he performed the solo sarangi for the film’s theme and the song “Yaarodu Yaaro.” Throughout his career, Sultan Khan received numerous awards, including the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 2010 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1992, recognizing his profound impact on Indian music.
