Singer Utpala Sen

Utpala Sen was a most popular Indian Bengali playback singer, born on March 12, 1924, in Dhaka, British India (now Bangladesh). Her musical journey began at the age of 11 with a public performance on Dhaka Radio in 1935, and she recorded her first song in 1939. Sen gained immense popularity in the early 1940s, especially with the devotional song “Ek Hate Mor Pujar Thala.” Her move to Calcutta in the 1940s marked a significant phase where she became associated with Radio Akashvani and ventured into playback singing for films. Sen is celebrated for her performance of Tagore songs, particularly “Amar Mallika Bone” in the film Bicharak (1959) and “Prantateri Gaan Amar,” a 1953 film composition by Salil Chowdhury, considered her best work.
