Bhupen Hazarika, born on September 8, 1926, in Sadiya, Assam, was a celebrated Indian playback singer, lyricist, musician, poet, and filmmaker. Known as the “Bard of Brahmaputra,” he composed and sang songs in Assamese, Bengali, and Hindi, focusing on themes of humanity and universal brotherhood. One of his notable songs is “Bistirno Parore,” inspired by Paul Robeson’s “Ol’ Man River.” In 2019, he was posthumously awarded India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna.
