Music Director Ilayaraja

Born on June 3, 1943, in Pannaipuram, Tamil Nadu, Ilayaraja was initially given the name Gnanathesigan. He is highly celebrated in Indian cinema for his musical contributions. His journey began in a rural area, where early exposure to Tamil folk music set the stage for his future career. Despite his humble beginnings, Ilayaraja’s talent became evident when he joined a musical troupe at the age of 14 and later excelled in a classical guitar course at the Trinity College of Music, London. His breakthrough came with the film “Annakili” in 1976. Among his famous works are the song “Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu” from “Thalapathi,” which received international acclaim. Also he directed a music in a “Jabilli Kosam” from “Manchi Manasulu.” His scores for “Nayakan” and “My Dear Kuttichathan,” the first 3D film in India. Ilayaraja has been honored with many awards, including the Padma Bhushan in 2010 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2018, two of the highest civilian awards in India. He has also won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction several times.
