Kamal Dasgupta, born on July 28, 1912, in Narail, Jessore (now in Bangladesh), was a renowned music director and composer. He started his music career early, inspired by his family and classical music traditions. Kamal became famous for his work with the Gramophone Company of India where he composed music for nearly four hundred songs of Kazi Nazrul Islam. He also served as a music director for about eighty Bangla films, establishing a significant mark in the Indian and Bangladeshi film industries with his distinct style that often incorporated elements of Rāga and Thumri. Among his vast body of work, some of Kamal Dasgupta’s most celebrated songs include “Sanjher Taraka Ami” from the movie Prithivi Amare Chay, ” “Ankhiyan Dheere Dheere Bole,” from “Meghdoot” and  “Ami Bhorer Juthika” from Ami Bhorer Juthika. These songs not only highlight his ability to evoke emotion through music but also his skill in utilizing the human voice as an instrument. His work won him honors such as the prestigious music award for Best Music Director for the song “Sanjher Taraka Ami.”
