He started his career in advertising before moving into filmmaking, directing notable films like “Gaman” in 1978 and the classic “Umrao Jaan” in 1981, which showcased his distinctive musical sensibility. Ali’s music, often rich with classical and folk influences, has left a lasting impact on Indian cinema.
