Music Director Omkar Prasad Nayyar

O. P. Nayyar, born on January 16, 1926, in Lahore, Pakistan, was a famous music director in the Indian film industry. He started his music career in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1949, composing background music for movies. Nayyar’s collaboration with famous singers like Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle resulted in many hit songs that are still loved today. He was particularly famous for shaping the career of Asha Bhosle, making her a prominent singer in the industry. However, he never worked with Lata Mangeshkar, which was a topic of much discussion. Some of his most famous songs include “Yeh Desh Hai Veer Jawaanon ka” from the movie “Naya Daur” (1957), and “Chain Se Humko Kabhi.” His work “Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye” (1973), won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for Asha Bhosle. Nayyar’s work in “Naya Daur” also earned him the Filmfare Best Music Director Award in 1958. His music in films like “C.I.D” (1956) and “Kashmir Ki Kali” (1964) is also highly celebrated. Nayyar’s contribution to Indian cinema was memorable, earning him awards such as the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for “Naya Daur” in 1958 and the Nandi Award for Best Music Director for “Neerajanam” in 1989.
