Kumar Sanu, born Kedarnath Bhattacharya on October 20, 1957, is an eminent figure in the Indian music industry, best known for his significant contribution to Bollywood playback singing. Sanu’s musical journey took a turn in 1989 when he was introduced to Kalyanji, one-half of the Kalyanji-Anandji music director duo, by Jagjit Singh. He changed his name to Kumar Sanu in admiration of his idol, Kishore Kumar, and moved to Mumbai, where his career flourished. Sanu gained immense popularity with his work in the 1990 film “Aashiqui,” where he sang all but one of the songs, marking the beginning of a series of successful collaborations with music director Nadeem-Shravan. This period saw Sanu winning five consecutive Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer for his songs in movies such as “Aashiqui” (1990), “Saajan” (1991), “Deewana” (1992), “Baazigar” (1993), and “1942: A Love Story” (1994), showcasing his versatility and dominance in the industry during the early to mid-90s. Sanu’s remarkable achievements include being honored with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 2009 for his contributions to Indian music and cinema.
