Singer Suraiya Jamaal Sheikh (Suraiya)

Suraiya Jamaal Sheikh, born on June 15, 1929, in Lahore, was one of the most celebrated figures in Hindi cinema, known for her dual talents as an actress and a playback singer. Her journey in the film industry began at the tender age of six when she first sang for All India Radio. Suraiya’s film debut came in 1941 with “Taj Mahal” where she played Mumtaz Mahal. She gained prominence with films like “Tadbir” (1943) and “Phool” (1945), singing some of her most memorable songs under the guidance of renowned music directors like Naushad Ali. She was especially noted for her performances in “Anmol Ghadi” (1946) and “Dillagi” (1949), which featured some of her most beloved songs like “Murliwale Murli Baja” and “Tu Mera Chand“. Suraiya’s contribution to Indian cinema was profound, with her peak years in the late 1940s to early 1950s. Her role as a courtesan in “Mirza Ghalib” (1954) was critically acclaimed, earning the film a National Award and a personal commendation from then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Among her accolades, she received the Screen Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996 for her contributions to Indian cinema. Suraiya’s impact was such that on the completion of 100 years of Indian Cinema, the government commemorated her by releasing a postage stamp in her honor​.
