Surinder Kaur, born on 25th November 1929 in Lahore, was a celebrated Indian singer, revered for her profound contribution to Punjabi folk music. Dubbed as the Nightingale of Punjab, her illustrious career spanned over six decades, during which she infused new life into Punjabi Sufi poetry and folk songs, including works by Bulleh Shah and Amrita Pritam. Her notable songs, such as “Maavan ‘te dheean”, “Jutti kasuri“, and “Bajre da sitta“, remain popular in Punjabi culture. Surinder Kaur was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Punjabi Folk Music in 1984 by India’s National Academy of Music, Dance and Theatre. She also received the Millennium Punjabi Singer award and the prestigious Padma Shri in 2006 for her artistic contributions. Additionally, Guru Nanak Dev University awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2002.
