Gulzar, born Sampooran Singh Kalra on 18 August 1934, is an well-known figure in the Indian music industry, celebrated for his profound contributions as a lyricist, poet, author, screenwriter, and film director. His journey in Hindi cinema began with his debut as a lyricist in the 1963 film “Bandini,” and he has since collaborated with legendary music directors like S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman, Salil Chowdhury, Vishal Bhardwaj, and A.R. Rahman. Gulzar’s artistry has been recognized with numerous accolades, including five Indian National Film Awards, 22 Filmfare Awards, an Academy Award, and a Grammy Award. He received the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, in 2004 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honor in Indian cinema, in 2013. In 2024, he was bestowed with the Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary honor.
