Rajendra Prasanna, born on April 15, 1956, in Varanasi, India, is a distinguished Indian classical musician known for his proficiency with the bansuri (flute) and shehnai (a traditional oboe). He comes from the Benares Gharana, a school known for its deep musical heritage, and was trained by his father Raghunath Prasanna, and uncles Bholanath and Vishnu Prasanna. Rajendra moved to Delhi in the early 1970s, enhancing his skills under the guidance of Hafeez Ahmed Khan and Sarfaraz Hussain Khan. He is celebrated for merging the intricate techniques of flute and shehnai playing. Throughout his career, Rajendra Prasanna has performed at prestigious venues and festivals such as the Edinburgh Festival, Sydney Opera House, and WOMAD Festival. His contributions to the field have earned him multiple honors, including the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1995 for his mastery in both flute and shehnai and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2017. He also received a Grammy Award certificate in 2004 for his participation in the “Concert for George.” Some of his famous tracks include pieces from albums like “Indian Classical Music” and “Flute Fantasy”.
